Setup takes a few minutes. Here's how to get Idio into your everyday text fields, and what to do when something isn't right.

Setup, in six steps

Setup in the app has six short steps and resumes where you left it.

1. Meet Idio. What Idio fixes, and what it leaves alone.
2. Enable the keyboard. Open iPhone Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard, and choose Idio. Full Access is optional.
3. Make it yours. Pick a theme, and choose key previews and haptics. Nothing here changes how Idio corrects or learns.
4. Choose Smart Correction. On, Idio Free fixes clear finished-word slips; every applied change is undoable. Pro adds Auto Clean after a pause and Clean Up. Off, Idio types like a normal keyboard.
5. Choose what's on. Learn how I write, Learn how I type and Track my typing progress are separate switches, each off until you turn it on. Basic correction and Undo work either way.
6. Try Idio. Pick Idio with the globe, type a word like senes and a space, then Backspace or tap Undo to put it back.

You can change every choice later in Idio → Settings: Permissions & setup, Typing, Appearance & feel and Privacy & Learning.

Full Access is optional

You don't need Full Access for typing, Smart Correction or learning. Turning it on (iPhone Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Idio) lets the keyboard share what it learned with the Idio app, so You can show it, and lets the keyboard play haptics: without it, iOS does not allow keyboard haptics even when the setting is on. Haptics are off by default; turn them on during setup or in Idio → Keyboard → Appearance & feel. Apple's permission allows broader capabilities, but the Idio keyboard makes no network requests and uses no cloud processing. Enabling it can share summaries saved earlier too; disabling it doesn't delete an existing shared copy.

Switch keyboards

Open a normal text field, hold the globe and choose Idio. Try the typing field on Idio's Home screen; nothing typed there is saved. Use Shift for an uppercase letter, double-tap Shift for Caps Lock, and 123 / #+= / ABC for number, symbol and letter pages. Hold Backspace to delete repeatedly, and hold Space to move the cursor. The globe switches to another keyboard.

Try Smart Correction

Setup asks whether to turn on Smart Correction. To change it later, open Idio → Keyboard → Typing behavior → Smart Correction, then close and reopen the keyboard. It works without Full Access. Type make senes with a space: when the safety checks agree, the word can become sense. Tap Backspace immediately, before continuing, to restore the original word and remove the space, or tap Undo in the strip above the keys. Tap ⋯ beside Undo for That's right — teach this, Keep original this time, Never change that spelling or Forget this learned mapping. A verified reversion suppresses that pair for the session; remembering it across keyboard sessions needs Learn how I write.

Idio may repair the word you just finished or, once later words settle it, one of the two before it. With Idio Pro, on a supported iPhone with Apple's on-device model available, a real typing pause can also trigger bounded cleanup of recent Idio-owned text. For example, type i thought y said u fixd this taste on apple app when i click on the heat map abdit expands weirdly and pause; Idio can produce I thought you said you fixed this taste on the Apple app. When I click on the heat map, it expands weirdly. automatically. New typing cancels that pass, and Undo restores the exact original. With Pro, Clean Up is the deliberate second look for when you think Idio missed something. It can inspect 1 sentence, 2 sentences or the paragraph according to Keyboard → Typing, with broader deliberate authority for typing/spelling errors, basic grammar, capitalization and punctuation while preserving wording and tone. If the model is unavailable or its proposal is too broad, Idio falls back to a narrower deterministic pass. Turn Smart Correction off at any time in Keyboard → Typing and reopen the keyboard.

Something not working?

Reset learning or delete data

1. Open Idio → Settings → Privacy & Learning → Data controls.
2. Choose one scope: Reset language learning (this also clears Never Change spellings), Reset touch learning, Delete typing progress, Delete word stats & examples or Delete saved text. Each touches only its own data. Resets keep your Smart Correction switch unchanged.
3. Or choose Reset everything for all learning, history, teaching, Fit Lab layouts and comparisons on this phone. Idio then asks separately whether to delete saved text too.
4. Reopen Idio keyboard to complete private deletion. If a reset fails, unlock your phone and retry; some data may remain until it succeeds. Deletions reach later iPhone backups, not ones already made. Remove any copies you saved outside Idio separately.

Teach Idio your hands · Pro

Passive touch learning is available without Pro, optional and off by default. Turn on Learn how I type in Idio → Settings → Privacy & Learning. With Pro, Keyboard → Teach Idio your hands adds a short guided round, about a minute, in the way you hold your phone: two thumbs, right hand or left hand. While learning is on, ordinary typing also adds per-key touch summaries; a private session adds none. Optional Full Access lets those summaries appear in My Idio, including earlier private samples.

Turn learning off to pause new statistics, or use Reset touch learning in Data controls to clear touch patterns and taught hand profiles. New typing starts a fresh profile if learning stays on. More samples do not establish a measured improvement in corrections.

Choose what Idio learns

Four separate switches in Idio → Settings → Privacy & Learning start off: Learn how I write, Learn how I type, Track my typing progress and Keep word stats & examples. Setup asks about the first three, and Settings → Permissions & setup can turn on both learning switches together after you confirm. Then reopen the keyboard. Optional Full Access is still your choice in iOS Settings; enable it if you want local summaries to appear in My Idio. Themes, colours, haptics and key previews live in Keyboard → Appearance & feel.

My Idio shows your language, hands and touch, typing patterns, later-context repairs and progress, from what you actually typed and confirmed. Choose how you usually type in Keyboard to label it yourself. Progress counts cover up to four weeks; older typing is not backfilled. Word stats & examples are kept for 7 days by default, or 30 if you choose. The private store keeps bounded per-word day counts plus correction examples; only a bounded top-five word summary and retained correction examples can reach My Idio, and only through the separate sharing switch. There is no sentence history, word order, per-use timestamp or retroactive backfill. With Learn how I write on, a verified immediate undo can teach a private negative correction pair. Continued typing does not prove a correction was right.

Correction works without waiting for training. It repairs recent finished words only when strict checks agree. Unsupported first-character changes, contractions, ambiguous slang, names, protected words and rapid newer input may be left alone. Backspace immediately after a correction, or tap Undo, to put a word back.

Your language, your choice

Learn how I write chooses whether Idio keeps bounded word counts, repairs you verifiably made yourself and changes you undid. It is separate from Learn how I type and starts off. Basic correction works without it. To protect an exact spelling, enter it in My Idio → Your language, or tap ⋯ → Never change after a correction; remove the rule in My Idio when you choose. Reopen the keyboard after settings changes. Full Access can share learning counts locally, not the words Idio learned; the app cannot remotely read the keyboard's private store.

Idio Pro

Idio Free remains a real keyboard: immediate correction, exact Undo/Backspace restore, Never Change, passive safe language/touch learning, preset themes, emoji search, a basic daily activity view and three Saved Text items. Idio Pro adds Auto Clean, Clean Up, personal phrase context, Teach Hands, Fit Lab, deeper My Idio insights/history, Saved Text beyond three items and advanced appearance.
