Setup should take a few moments. Here's how to get Idio into your everyday text fields.
Idio isn't publicly downloadable from the App Store yet. If you're an invited tester, open TestFlight → Idio Keyboard → Update or Install. Check the displayed version/build; an older beta may differ from screens being prepared for release.
1. Enable Idio
Open Idio and choose Home → Set up Idio. Then open iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard, and select Idio.
2. Leave Full Access off to start
You don't need Full Access for typing. It's optional for sharing keyboard research locally with the containing app. Apple's permission allows broader capabilities, but Idio does not use networking or cloud inference. Enabling it can share previously captured history too; disabling it doesn't delete an existing shared copy.
3. Switch keyboards
Open a normal text field, hold the globe and choose Idio. Try the unsaved typing field on Idio's Home screen. Use Shift for an uppercase letter, double-tap Shift for Caps Lock, and 123 / #+= / ABC for number, symbol and letter pages. Hold backspace to delete repeatedly. The globe switches to another keyboard.
Try Smart Correction Beta · Build 3
In Idio → Settings, enable Smart Correction · Beta, then close and reopen the keyboard. It is off by default and works without Full Access. Type make senes with a space: when the safety checks agree, the last word can become sense. Tap Backspace immediately, before continuing, to restore the original word and remove the space. A verified reversion teaches Idio to resist that pair until reset.
This is intentionally narrow: it often leaves typos alone, does not add apostrophes or revise earlier sentence text, and respects fields that disable autocorrection. It pauses while keyboard research controls are open. Turn it off at any time in Settings and reopen the keyboard. Older builds 1–2 do not include this switch.
Something not working?
Idio doesn't appear in a text field
Check that Idio is listed in Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. Password fields, phone-pad fields and apps that block third-party keyboards use an iOS keyboard. Try a normal Notes field and select Idio with the globe. The Idio app cannot independently verify keyboard registration or the current Full Access permission.
Why isn't it automatically correcting?
Check your TestFlight build: Smart Correction starts with build 3 and must be enabled in Idio Settings. Reopen the keyboard after enabling it. It only changes a completed last word when strict checks agree; missed corrections are expected. Research playground proposals and Shadow Mode never change inserted text. Idio does not provide predictions, generated replies or tone rewriting.
Research data doesn't appear in the app
Research is off by default. In the keyboard, tap … and read the separate capture/Shadow Mode consent. Use invented text only. For app inspection, enable optional Full Access, reopen the keyboard, then open Research → Capture & motor analytics → Refresh analytics. A snapshot is not a live permission indicator. Closing research controls stops collection; saved data remains until cleared.
Storage is unavailable or a save failed
Stop research, check available device storage, unlock the device, and reopen Idio. Ordinary typing remains available. Retry the action; do not assume a failed save or clear succeeded. Contact support with the error text, not your captured typing data.
Can I use dictation?
Idio does not record audio or provide dictation. iOS may offer system-owned microphone controls. Switch to the iOS keyboard if you need features Idio doesn't provide.
Clear research or reset learning
- Close the keyboard's research panel to stop capture and Shadow Mode.
- Open Idio → Settings → Clear all research data, then confirm. This clears app/shared stores and requests keyboard-private deletion, including Smart Correction reversion learning. Reset keeps your Smart Correction switch unchanged. Reset keyboard learning & research uses the same broad scope.
- Reopen Idio keyboard to complete private deletion. With Full Access off, a shared acknowledgement can't be written.
- If clearing fails, retry in the app and use keyboard … → Clear telemetry. Some data may remain until both stores can be cleared. Remove any copies you saved outside Idio separately.
Clear playground language profile affects only the app playground's counts. It does not clear keyboard or calibration research. Read the complete privacy and retention details.
